S.C. Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement supporters marched in their annual parade Saturday in Columbia. The group also sponsored a film festival and weeklong celebration that runs through Monday.
Some of our major points are celebrating the diversity of the South Carolina gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community; (and) support and advocate for change, so we can educate the community on issues like a family discrimination amendment that will come up in November.
We hope to host a series of town hall meetings around the state and welcome the greater community who may have questions or issues. It is not a simple amendment but a more complex decision that has been placed in front of them that will affect their neighbors, co-workers and families. We are going to go to forums like the State Fair and other festivals.
We fear that legislation will try to strip our adoption rights. What would happen if, for example, my sister dies, and in her will, she leaves me custody of her children? Would her will stand, or would her children be taken away because my rights to adopt them could be stripped?
