Everyone who loved Norm MacDonald when he played Burt Reynolds on Saturday Night Live's "Celebrity Jeopardy" will be pleased to know that MacDonald released a CD last Tuesday.
MacDonald said the best way to write sketches is just to have one central joke and branch off from it, then always come back to the primary theme to wrap it up. Telling a bunch of random stories for laughs is the equivalent of some amateur reaching into a grab bag of jokes, he said.
MacDonald, who said he writes his stand-up comedy for an adult audience, begins the CD with the members of the Fantastic Four sitting around, while the group's leader, Reed Richards, comes up with names for each of them such as Invisible Woman and Human Torch. Each name seems fitting except for Reed's.
When the Thing makes the point everyone else is named after adjectives the Human Torch poses the question, "Why can't you be called like we are, what you do, what your power is?"
On a few other tracks, MacDonald plays the role of a gambling sportscaster. You would think that MacDonald drew his inspiration from his role as a news anchor for "Weekend Update" on SNL, but MacDonald said otherwise.
There are also a few tracks dedicated to the world's first gay couple. Bill Delany (MacDonald) and Fred Henderson (Will Ferrell) are watching a football game on TV and sipping cold beer when they realize that the only thing better than that would be having sex. The only problem is that there aren't any women around.
Then you hear the sound effects of the men taking off their clothes. Bill comes up with a way for them to have sex without women, and it involves a lot of screaming and the usual random exclamations from Ferrell's character.
Another sketch, "Stan + Lois," is the funniest track on the CD. The story begins with the narrator chronicling the story of Stan Hooper, the newest reporter at the Daily Planet. While having a discussion with Stan, Clark Kent divulges that he is Superman. As soon as Clark mentions his attraction to Lois Lane, Stan decides that he must win Lois over before Clark does.
After that, whenever Clark leaves, Stan decides to leave as well and he hides until the real Superman solves the problem, before he returns to the scene. The story ends on a hilarious note, with Stan taking Lois to his "Fortress of Solitude," which is actually a room at the YMCA.
The remaining tracks are occupied with Molly Shannon playing roles such as a woman that lit her husband's bed on fire and a woman with a multiple-personality disorder. MacDonald also jokes about a drunken country singer, Christmas gifts gone wrong and "Star Search."
