The candidates' opinions dovetailed smoothly on every issue, including the touchy subject of laws and state agency procedures that should be amended to protect transgendered peoples' rights.

"All protections in every agency of the state that reaches out and protects the rights of gays and lesbians should do the same for the transgendered community," replied Christopher Hodgkins.

Sederbaum wasn't surprised that the candidates maintained progressive views, or that they were in such uniform agreement about the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community issues.

"It's very reassuring," he said. "But it cuts both ways. It might make us feel safer than perhaps we should. It doesn't mean marriage rights won't get taken away. There's still homophobia behind closed doors."
