(Stockholm, Sweden) – A team of Swedish researchers from the Stockholm Brain Institute say they have determined that lesbians' brains react differently to sex hormones than those of heterosexual women.
Monday’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences presented the findings of the research group, which supports an earlier study that indicated gay men's brain responses were different from straight men.
The difference in brain patters for lesbians and straight women is less pronounced than the difference found between gay men and straight men, the findings showed. Lesbians' brains reacted somewhat, though not completely, like those of heterosexual men, the Associated Press reported.
A year ago, the same research team reported their findings that gay men’s brains responded to hormones in a similar way to that of heterosexual women. Both sets of findings support the theory that homosexuality is not a learned behavior.
The team of researchers, led by Ivanka Savic, had volunteers sniff chemicals derived from male and female sex hormones. These chemicals are thought to be pheromones, molecules known to trigger responses such as defense and sex in animals.
