It ignores the fact that English language classes have long waiting lists and forgets that many of us have ancestors who came here in their later years and never learned English.

The president, to his considerable credit, is holding out for a sensible, rounded and realistic program that, in addition to addressing legitimate border security issues, would allow for accredited temporary workers and open a path to eventual citizenship for those qualifying.

But even Bush is doing so in language that increasingly mimics the magpie scoldings of the deportation chorus - as if we ever would really drive some 12 million back across the border: grandmas, old men with walkers, kids born and schooled here who have never known any other home, and moms with babies. Republicans - and their talk radio outriders - love to chide Democrats for not having a clear program for their candidates to bring to the fall elections. Fair point.

But maybe no program is better with than one deeply sour with gay fright, foreigner bashing and an anti-Mexican fervor that can't quite hide its neo-racist support.
